Stories from the road for friends and family

Rain, rain, rain, rain

We had a wonderful time visiting family in Manhattan, but we surely felt sorry for those families at the “Tuttle Puddle” campground who have little kids along. It’s rained every day since we’ve been here for at least a few hours, and the ground is sodden. Nice and green, though. It hasn’t interferred with our [...]

On the road again…

Here’s the route and stopping points for our trip starting in the morning. Altogether it’s about 850 miles, but in easy one-day stages. The exact days when we’ll move from place to place are still up in the air, but we’ll be back in St. Joseph well before the house closing date (August 14th).

Inspection passed!

This afternoon we spent a couple of hours with the house inspector, going over the new house with a fine-toothed comb. Aside from a few nit-picking little things, it’s in really great shape, especially for a house approaching the century mark. The garage is another matter, but that’s not a show-stopper. The inspector advised it [...]

Hey, AT&T!

According to CNN, AT&T reported that fewer iPhones were activated on the weekend of introduction than expected. This resulted in Apple stock tumbling about 2% yesterday — down $8.81. Well, doh! It took 3 days to activate mine, and nearly a week to activate Phil’s, and I’m very sure we weren’t unique. Thanks a lot, [...]

This house has some furniture already

Here’s the snapshots (slightly PhotoShopped) of the furniture we bought yesterday that I took with my iPhone at the store. OK, so I really edited this image a lot. We got two of these stools to use in the kitchen. They’re brushed steel to match the appliances, and pretty comfortable as well as sturdy. The [...]

Houses Need Furniture

And a good place to find it is at Nebraska Home Furnishings in Kansas City. We spent the afternoon there browsing, and found a table and chairs for the dining room and a couple of at stools to go in the kitchen. I’ll put snapshots I took with my iPhone on here after we get [...]

A Done Deal

We signed the house contract yesterday, and spent most of today on the phone with the lender and insurance companies, getting all the information they need together. In between bouts of phoning and looking up data, we worked up a projected schedule for the next couple of months. We’ll stay in St. Joe until next [...]

By the way…

I guess I never did mention that the first house we made an offer on isn’t the one we’re going to actually buy. The seller in that case never accepted our offer or made a counter offer, so I went shopping again and found the one we made the deal on today. There may be [...]

Got the House!

Pictures to follow, but this just in: we’ve agreed on a price with the seller, and we have financing, so all that’s needed now to make it final is for the appraisal to fall into line, which it almost certainly will. Hooray!! It’s quite a red-letter day: the house, our 1st wedding anniversary, and Phil’s [...]
