Texas RV Campgrounds

Gulf Coast

We need to get there from the east, which means coming through Louisiana. At this point, it appears the RV parks east of Houston near I-10 are pretty dismal, so we will probably stop at a travel center (the new nomenclature for truck stop) and dry camp instead of overpaying for a park with no WiFi or decent pull-through sites.

  • TA Travel Center, exit 789, Ganado
    • Speedzone WiFi Hotspot – $4.79/24 hours
    • 104 parking spots
    • RV dump station
  • Pilot Travel Center, exit 789, Baytown
    • RV/Truck Wash
    • NO WiFi
    • 160 parking spots
    • on-site McDonald’s (but no WiFi there, either)
  • Baytown Citgo Travel Center, exit 793 (no info)
  • Conoco Travel Plaza, exit 797 (no info)

While we are near Houston, we might as well get the maintenance done that we didn’t get taken care of in Florida. This website is a list of Texas RV repair shops.

Central Texas

We stayed at La Grange for two months, using that as a base for day trips around central and east Texas. It is between Austin and Houston, just about 20 miles southwest of Brenham. We may stop there again next year, too. La Grange is a friendly town, the hill country terrain is appealing, and it’s a convenient base for doing genealogy research in the area as well as being the quietest RV park we’ve ever experienced. That is, except for the night when a cow got out of her fence and complained about it loudly at 3 a.m.!

From Central to West Texas

  • Take-It-Easy RV Park, Kerrville
    • A good stopping point on the way from Austin to Alpine
    • Free WiFi, pool, hot tub, big-rig friendly
  • Circle Bar RV Park
    • About half-way from Kerrville to Fort Stockton
    • Free WiFi, and all that, and very reasonable rates
    • The WiFi didn’t work, and the rates, although cheap, were too much for this vastly unimproved park.
  • Comanche Land RV Park, Fort Stockton
    • Very low cost, convenient, but no WiFi
    • nearby McDonald’s does offer WiFi for a price if we’re desperate
    • There were no vacancies when I called, so we skipped this one and went directly to Alpine.
  • La Vista RV Park
    • about 6 miles south of Alpine on the road to Terlingua
    • looks a little more remote and primitive than the other parks in town, but does offer free WiFi vs the paid services at the other places
    • WiFi was very fast and reliable, but our AT&T wireless phones got no service here thanks to a mountain between us and the cell tower. Thank goodness for Skype!
    • The wildlife, including a herd of goats and a covey of quail, and the peace and quiet, made up for the slightly inconvenient location. We’d stay here again.

Davis Mountains & Big Bend Country

“Isolated by the surrounding desert, the mountains form a “sky island” with a unique biota unlike anything else to be found in Texas.”
